You can read more about the Dickens characters and decide for yourself if these similarities are accurate, this is just my interpretation. Matthew comes in as Sydney Carton as he is in love with Cordelia by the end of ChoG, but he is aware of her love for James. While in the novel, Lucie and Charles have a clearly reciprocated love for one another, Cordelia and James love each other but do not know of each other's love.

The similarities are as follows: Cordelia is in love with James (as Lucie is with Charles). UNTIL I read about the TLH love triangle. Because of this, I always wondered why Cassandra Clare mentioned A Tale of Two Cities so much outside of Will and Tessa both liking the book. This love triangle is not exactly similar to the TID love triangle because Lucie does not reciprocate feelings for Sydney, and Charles and Sydney do not share the love that Will and Jem do. You may have picked up on it from TID or have read it yourself, but Sydney Carton ends up sacrificing himself so that Lucie and Charles can be together happily (as Charles was supposed to be executed). In this book, there is a love triangle between Lucie Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton. Hear me out! The Infernal Devices drew inspiration from the novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. This all leads me to the prediction that Matthew will most likely die in either Chain of Iron or Chain of Thorns. I also don't think they can have a similar relationship to Tessa/Will/Jem because I have not seen James interact with Matthew as anything other than his parabatai. However, Matthew is still one of my favorite characters in the series I just don't think he and Cordelia would fit together. I am a hardcore Cordelia/James shipper and will stand by that for forever. Mainly because I dislike it with a passion. I have been obsessed with the Cordelia/James/Matthew love triangle since I finished ChoG. TL DR at the end if you don't want to read my essay
